The valve contains a weighted ball that sits in a cradle. When an earthquake shakes the ground above a certain threshold — typically 5.4 magnitude or greater — the ball dislodges and blocks gas flow automatically. No power or human action required.
Technically yes — most valves have a simple reset button. But you should not reset it until the gas company or a licensed plumber has inspected your lines for damage. If there's a break in your gas line and you reset the valve, gas can leak into an enclosed space. Call PG&E first.
The valve is installed on the gas supply line immediately after the meter — between the meter and the first gas appliance connection. This position ensures the entire home's gas supply is protected with a single valve.
